The Nonprofit Commons project (NPC) , managed by TechSoup Global , is a virtual community of practice for nonprofits to explore the opportunities and benefits of Second Life. Is your work here in Second Life as an individual or are you representing a foundation?
I am in SL as a part of my work at JAN.

Brief Summary of your organization:
The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) gives information on how to make an accommodation or modification to a work setting so someone with a disability or limitation can do a job, we give information on the Americans with Disabilities Act and related legislation and we give information on self employment and small business issues for people with disabilities. We are funded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy.

How did you find out about NPC and why did you get involved?
I ran across NPC while looking for resources for non-profit organizations and businesses in SL. It seems to be both a great resource and a very friendly community within

Some say the professional networking opportunities in SL have been extraordinary. Have you found this to be true? If so, what advice would you give someone for effective networking in SL?
We're ~~fairly new to SL, so don't have~~ definitely finding a lot of ~~experience in this area.~~ opportunities in Second Life for networking. I do think ~~that there are great opportunities~~ the best way to make connections ~~and get to~~ is just to put yourself out there, talk to everybody you can. You never know ~~other organizations.~~ when an opportunity might pop up!

Why do you think virtual worlds such as Second Life are valuable for nonprofits?
I think the advantage to virtual worlds are that they are a way to present a great amount of information to a large number of people in a very economic manner. The opportunity to host events to disseminate knowledge and promote awareness is a great benefit.

Do you think every nonprofit should have a presence within SL or is it only appropriate for particular types of organizations?
I think as a rule any non-profit organization would benefit from a SL presence to promote awareness of the work that they do.

More than likely you are fairly new to SL. Since there is a learning curve, what advice would you give to make being in SL easier?
I think the best way to get started is to jump in and get started. I did a lot of Google searches on "Newbie" guides and how to get started in SL, and following examples from those got me a lot more familiar with how SL works.

Current/On-going needs (RL or SL)?
~~At the moment our biggest need is some space to work.~~ Currently we're working on getting more involved in the SL community. We have ~~some idea~~ our office space on ~~getting our information out to users and are currently looking for organizations to work with to increase awareness of who we are and what we do.~~ Health Commons that has a number of resources available.

Position Description:

Promote NPC events following guidelines, helping other NPC members to do the same with their events, updating event media platforms. Act as contact person for general NPC events and events held by NPC members. Update event information on NPC Blog, Event Calendar, Google Docs, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Duties include:

Getting/Receiving Event Information:

Doing "Call for Announcements" at weekly NPC meeting.

Communicating with NPC members who have events that want to be promoted.

Posting/Updating Event Information:

Updating the Event Calendar and NPC Blog.

Tweeting about upcoming and live events.

Posting events on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Linking and tagging all of the above appropriately.

Requirements:

Experience managing social media content.

Ability to write and edit content to be appropriate for e-Communications (2.0 Internet and SL).

Fluency with social media tools including blogs, Google Docs, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Experience with SL media tools, such as notecards, slurls, group notices and search.

Ways to promote events in-world:

Make a flyer (in Photoshop or other design program) and use this to promote the event in real life and SL.and create a landmark to your event location
Make a notecard in Second Life and send to all of your SL groups and friends, including TechSoup and Nonprofit Commons
Through the NPSL tag (in del.icio.us ). If you tag something NPSL (for Nonprofits in Second Life), it will be fed through our community blog.
By blogging to the community blog (if you want to be a blogger for this site, IM Creech Antwerp in-world)
Email the TechSoup Second Life Google Group about it. Include a slurl to the event location and send a reminder on the day of the event
Post it to your Twitter , Facebook , and other online social networking sites that you belong to.
Post your event to the event calendar . Common spaces, such as the NPC Common Ground party space, NPC1 ampitheater and the one on aloft are available for people to use for nonprofit-related events. If you want to schedule using this space, please email Susan/Glitter or Megan/Penguin to let us know and then add it to the event calendar so the space is reserved and we don't have conflicting events.
Post the event to the secondlife.com events site. This will put your event up on eventful.com without the NPSL tag. Got to eventful.com , add NPSl and other tags, add picture, etc. Add to the Second Life Nonprofits Event Calendar (you have to join group to post event). When you tag this event "NPSL", it will be appear on the NonprofitCommons.org site and when you add it to the Second Life Nonprofit Commons Event Calendar, it will stream into the NPC in-world events calendar.
Tag your photos NPSL, and they will be in our Flickr stream on NonprofitCommons.org
Come too our weekly meeting , every Friday from 8:30-9:30am PST/SLT and speak at open mike or ask Glitteractica to put you on agenda

Send a blurb to CNN's iReports, or if better yet, drop a notecard or IM MincedMedia Clip . Event Hosts	Wear a radar and greet visitors as they enter the chat range (Ninlil has a free radar HUD for this, please IM). Send out party announcements. Keep guests entertained. Come in-world if you can when paged (pager tool coming soon, for now, we will meet to determine a schedule.)
Communications Coordinator	promoting NPC events following guidelines, helping other NPC members to do the same with their events, updating event calendar
Community Gateway Project	Building landing spot, assembling tutorials/guides for newcomers, looking at good examples from other gateways that do a good job of this to help direct our efforts
