[8:52] Ledoof Constantineau: Rape Crisis Scotland does not provide support or counselling within Second Life at this time. There are, however, information stations placed throughout the site with links to support services internationally and useful information for survivors of sexual violence.
[8:52] Ledoof Constantineau: We are here to promote awareness raising about sexual violence against women and girls, and, to underake campaigning work.
[8:52] Ledoof Constantineau: A large part of the work to raise awareness and challenge attitutudes about rape and sexual violence has been the promotion of the 'this is not an invitation to rape me' campaign, which I'll talk about today and which you can also explore more at our site here at NPC in SL.
[8:52] Ledoof Constantineau: how am i for pace? too speedy? ok?

[8:53] Tuty Inkpen: ok
[8:53] Ledoof Constantineau: ok, onto the campaign
[8:53] Ledoof Constantineau: which you can see the logo for here
[8:53] Ledoof Constantineau: This Is Not An Invitation To Rape Me was created in 1994 in New York City by Charles Hall and Eric McClellan in response to the attempted rape of a friend who would not press charges for fear of the harsh judicial process and the public humiliation associated with accusing someone of rape.
[8:53] Ledoof Constantineau: In 1995, thanks to the introduction by Dr. Susan Sorenson of the U.C.L.A. School of Public Health, the campaign was donated to the L.A. Commission on Assaults Against Women (LACAAW). It ran throughout Los Angeles and was included in U.C.L.A.'s and Cal State Northridge's freshman orientation program. The campaign was later shared with CALCASA and ran throughout the state of California. For the past 14 years, LACAAW, (now known as Peace Over Violence) has used the campaign locally and shared the work with organizations around the country.
[8:54] Ledoof Constantineau: The launch of the campaign in Scotland through Rape Crisis Scotland, represents the first time the campaign has been shared with another country. The revised executions are based on a simple insight and design by Graham Clifford of Graham Clifford Design and the creative direction of Charles Hall, a Professor at the VCU Brandcenter in Richmond, Virginia.
[8:54] Ledoof Constantineau: According to Graham and Charles, "The 'This is not an invitation to rape me' campaign is a cry for justice." - hence the teardrop logo
[8:54] Ledoof Constantineau: so why have a campaign..
[8:55] Ledoof Constantineau: In Scotland, only 3.7% (up slightly this year from 2.9%) of rapes recorded by the police currently lead to a conviction, and the humiliation experienced by female complainers in court is well documented.
[8:55] Ledoof Constantineau: Despite recent efforts to help women who have been raped to receive justice, societal attitudes continue to play a significant role in limiting justice for women who have experienced this crime.
[8:55] Ledoof Constantineau: can people see the research findings on the screen?
[8:55] Dusty Artaud: yes
[8:55] Bahia Pearl: yes
[8:56] Ledoof Constantineau: some pretty shocking attitudes from a range of research
[8:56] Ledoof Constantineau: • 27% of people think a woman can be at least partly responsible if she is drunk at the
time of the attack
[8:56] Ledoof Constantineau: • 18% think rape can be a woman’s fault if she is known to have had many sexual
partners
[8:56] Ledoof Constantineau: • 1 in 2 boys and 1 in 3 girls thought it was acceptable for a man to force a woman to
have sex in certain circumstances
[8:57] Louise Later: 1 in 3! that is surprising
[8:57] Ledoof Constantineau: in addition to attitudes there's also conviction rates and questions women are asked during rape trials
[8:57] Ledoof Constantineau: Low conviction rate:
in Scotland - 3.7%
England and Wales - 6.5%
[8:57] Ledoof Constantineau: International comparisons on attrition/conviction rates
o A recent review of European country studies on rape found that every country, except Germany, that provided data showed a decline in the proportion of prosecutions and convictions. In Germany, the proportion of prosecutions and convictions has increased since 1997. (Kelly and Regan, 2001; Regan and Kelly, 2003).
[8:57] Ledoof Constantineau: o Much higher prosecution rates than those in the UK were evident in a number of countries (including more than 50% of reports in Austria and Denmark). In Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Iceland the majority of prosecutions for rape resulted in convictions. (Kelly and Regan, 2001; Regan and Kelly, 2003). The only European country with a lower conviction rate than the UK was Ireland (Regan and Kelly, 2003).
[8:57] Ledoof Constantineau: o A report issued by the US Senate Judiciary Committee in 1993 revealed the average conviction rate in the USA in 1990 was 12%. A subsequent review has found the conviction rate to vary across the USA, from 2.5% to 19.9% (Kelly, Lovett, and Regan, 2005).
[8:58] any1 Gynoid: conviction rates for other crimes are int he 80% + range
[8:58] Ledoof Constantineau: Women are also routinely asked intrusive, distressing & often humiliating questions in court about their sexual history & character. RCS had a poster campaign on this issue, which you can see at the site in SL.
[8:58] Ledoof Constantineau: prior to launching the campaign the images were tested among several focus groups in order to assess the impact and gauge whether the images were successful in addressing intended issues.
[8:58] Ledoof Constantineau: Some of the comments reinforced the need for such a campaign:
[8:58] Ledoof Constantineau: • “You aren’t being fair to a man to expect
him to stop once he has been aroused”
• “Bullseye” - reaction from young man to
image of 3 young women drinking
• “Women need to take more care of
themselves and not put themselves in
stupid situations”
• “If a woman acts like a slut she deserves
to be treated like a slut”
[8:59] Ledoof Constantineau: The campaign was eventually launched in October of last year and the images appeared in billboards, bus shelters, national media etc across the country. (i'll show you photos taken of a few at the end).
[8:59] Louise Later: "Nothing is an invitation to rape"
[8:59] Ledoof Constantineau: RCS also made use of the internet and social media, with an
an interactive website:
http://www.thisisnotaninvitationtorapeme.co.uk
facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=30082237828
and of course the space here in SL.
[9:00] Ledoof Constantineau: The campaign aims to tackle the assumptions and judgements people make about women who are raped, by stimulating debate.
The following images aim to address some of the main women blaming myths around
[9:00] Ledoof Constantineau: what women wear
[9:00] Ledoof Constantineau: levels of intimacy, where a woman 'should have known what would happen next' or is a tease/has led him on;
[9:01] Ledoof Constantineau: that women who drink only have themselves to blame for making themselves vulnerable;
and the belief that women can't be raped by husbands or partners or that these assaults are somehow less serious
[9:01] Zazoom Zimminy: Zazoom Zimminy whispers Kyle Reis, Grants Managers Network, NYC. Sorry I'm late
[9:01] Glitteractica Cookie: (waves to Zaz)
[9:01] Ledoof Constantineau: Some reactions to the images were very strong:
[9:01] Ledoof Constantineau: “To associate pictures of a Wedding with rape is just the confirmation I needed for taking my beautiful wife and children away from this
country”
“What a horribly sexist campaign”
“This campaign effectively states that ALL MEN ARE RAPISTS ! I
resent this abusive feminist sexist slander”
[9:02] Ledoof Constantineau: Many really valued the message being out there:
“This campaign is fantastic. It provides a much needed challenge to
prevalent women blaming myths about rape and I'm sure that it will provoke
lots of heated discussion and debate. Hopefully some attitudes will be
changed but it will certainly, at the very least, make people think. Thank you
for putting it out there”.
[9:02] Ledoof Constantineau: “Thank you. Just thank you.”
[9:02] Glitteractica Cookie: Le doof, this is fascinating stuff, in the interest of time, can u connect us with some links, like to your facebook group etc
[9:02] Ledoof Constantineau: Hopefully the campaign - for which a second stage will be launched in the near future - is successful in initiating dialogue and debate and begins to challenge women blaming attitudes.
We need to shift blame and responsibility onto those who perpetrate the crime.
you're all welcome to take an activist pack and to display images and info about the campaign where you can.
[9:02] Kali Idziak: Ledoof, do you deal at all with men being raped either by women or men?
[9:02] Louise Later: (thank you for printing the text in chat--my Assistive Text reads it aloud that way.)
[9:03] Abbiee Benazzi: yes this is very interesting and being a victim in early life I have a lot to say
[9:03] Ledoof Constantineau: i think i've ran over time
[9:03] Ledoof Constantineau: but am more than happy to talk to anyone at any time about the campaign
[9:03] Ledoof Constantineau: just IM me
[9:03] Fleche Xeno: Is there any plan to use the incidence of virtual rapes inworld as a teachable moment?
[9:03] Ledoof Constantineau: or come over to the site
[9:03] Buffy Beale: So interesting thanks Ledoof
[9:03] LizaJune Stoop: Do you have o0ffice hours?
[9:03] Ledoof Constantineau: there are no regular office hours at the moment
[9:04] Glitteractica Cookie: links--facebook groups, etc?
[9:04] Ledoof Constantineau: please put your questions to me in IM so that i dont miss anything
[9:04] Dusty Artaud: Thank you Ledoof great presentation.
